Are you working on a story that carries weight—something mythic, intimate, or shaped by the landscapes that made you? Do you want to publish with a small press that values craft, culture, and emotional resonance? Beginning January 1, Basalt Sea Press is opening submissions for the 2026 editorial year, and we’re inviting writers who share our vision to join us.

A cozy reading nook inviting readers to explore new stories.

We publish work that blends myth, memory, land, and the American West, but we also welcome pieces that stretch beyond those borders. Whether you write fiction, essays, or hybrid forms, this is a home for stories with depth and intention. If your work explores meaning, ancestry, place, or the uncanny undercurrents of American history, you’ll fit right in.

What We’re Looking For

We’re interested in writing that feels alive and leaves an echo after the final line. We especially encourage submissions in the following areas:

• Mythic fiction and retellings

• Indigenous-inspired or land-based storytelling

• Literary fiction with a strong sense of place

• Dark Americana or uncanny frontier narratives

• Personal essays rooted in memory or landscape

• Hybrid or experimental short forms

If your work speaks to endurance, connection, or the deeper layers of story, we want to read it.
